Heading into the backcountry has long been one of our favorite past-times. Recently we discovered a little hideaway on the backside of Aspen Mountain called Smith Cabin Aspen, a virtually off-the-grid oasis surrounded by seemingly endless skiable terrain. In the winter, access to the cabin is granted only via skinning or snowmobiling, making the stunning views of the Castle Creek Valley it provides even more rewarding. We, however, never saw those views, thanks to a several-day storm that showered several feet of snow on us—no one complained though as it also provided us with fresh tracks each day of our stay. In between skinning and skiing, we cooked, imbibed, and warmed up by the fire. The trip was a resounding success that led to great turns, great photos and unforgettable moments in the mountains.
